One of my very hard working forum members and I have an integrated chat script that bridges the Ubb.x login user with an IRC chat room.

The official test is Tuesday night but the beta works fine.

Features:

Integrated with ubb.x forum log in. Forum username is automatically added to input box and cannot be changed prior to sign on!

Username prefix automatically added to usernames? Have common usernames? Add your forum prefix to your registered members usernames. ex> cartalk_joey

Members without a registered username on your forum are unable to enter.

Once in the IRC room your members cannot change their username or rooms

Simple code can be added to any webpage.

More updates to follow!

What does it look like?

Can we wrap it up in our own site design? (framed?)

THANKS!

We test it tonight, hope to have 30-40 forum users with all types of browsers and operating systems.

If it is successful I will post the link for you to view the layout.

The chat screen itself is a floating window. The input box containing the "unchangeable" forum user name can be added to any webpage.

From there we made some changes to the IRC client which disallows changing of username and rooms. Also as a security measure non-registered members cannot enter the room. mIRC users will not be able to override the IRC settings since they will not be able to find the server.

Wish us luck!

We pull the forum user cookie and auto enter it into the ENTER input form - it cannot be altered.

A prefix or suffix can be auto-added (behind the scenes) to this name before they enter the chat room. For example our forums initials are THT. If our forum members username is "boatguy" it will appear in the IRC chat as "tht_boatguy". This helps in preventing the "registered name already in use" problem associated with IRC.

And yes, aside from writing our own chat program the IRC method appears to be the best.

We test in a few hours... I'll post the results. So far the only glitch was from firewalls
ie. People trying to access from work! Wink

UPDATE:

The chat worked great!

Registered users entered the chat room with their forum username already in place with our forum prefix attached.

EX: tht_webdeco

We will be perfoming another BETA of this chat on Thursday night for those who would like to try it out. Remember, you'll have to register with the forum to be able to enter.

You may wish to view both ways, as an unregistered user to see how we set security to prevent your access. Then as a registered user to see how we pre-populate your forum username (uneditable) for entry into the chat.

I'll post the link here Thursday afternoon.

We have a chat tonight (Tuesday) at 9:00 PM EST.

Try visiting the page before registering and you'll find you cannot enter without a registered username.

Next, register a username on my forum then visit the page. You'll see your registered username (from my forum) in the input box.

Enter the room and your name will appear again with the prefix tht_ before it.

You will not have the ability to alter your username.

Here's the link:

Still working on the site design.

I've been working on something along these lines, but I am very interested to see how things go with taking the user name out of the cookie, etc. We've got an IRC chat forum going as part of our site, however right now, there are two separate logins, one for the forums, one for the chat area; not the smoothest way to do things, so I am very interested to see your way of doing things. Please keep me posted.
