I am not sure where to post this so I thought I would try here.

I was wondering what some of the other moderators' opinions are of the "Allow Username Changes" option is? Do you have your set on or off?

Last night, I noticed someone who was logged in, had just posted a bunch of things, and whose name I did not recognize. I thought he must be new but noticed that our member count had not gone up. I checked and he was an existing member, only he had given himself a new name and a new avatar -- a whole new look!

Something just doesn't seem right about that. What does everyone else do? I can't think of a good reason to allow these (I'm not sure but I guess the board defaults to the "Allow" setting since I never turned them on or off).

I don't allow members to change their username. However, if they have a good reason why they want it changed, I will change it for them. Otherwise, I don't see the reason behind why they would want to change it, personally.

We have this option turned off as well and if a member wants it changed, they need to contact me!

We do not do it because of past histories with fake nicks, etc., that only causes major problems with other members, kwim?

we havent been asked yet.. but would change it for them if asked , but we arent a huge board & we know our members pretty well

The other thing that I've been telling people is to change their display name if they want it changed. I've had a couple of people do that. It's easier for me anyway.

I agree with Desert Lady. I've turned that option "off" as well. If they need to change it for a particular reason, they need to contact me.

I too have it turned off. If there is some good reason that the user can give me for the change, I will do it for them, but I don't allow them to do it themselves. I've got too many users that would abuse such a feature.
