I've been thinking of ways that we could help expand my community's services to both generate more interest and hopefully encourage more financial income (for maintenance via Groupee/Thrive). One of the biggest potential ideas we've had is a customizable web space/hosting/storage service for our community members. However, this isn't something that we can reasonably add directly as part of our Groupee hosting account, because of the (reasonable) limitations in storage and transfer volume.

At the same time, I've been thinking of the possibility of moving our community away from the "infopop.cc" domain to a new, primary-registered domain. Then I wondered if there was any way to combine the two.

So, my question is this: If I have an external web hosting account, and assuming I have at least some DNS control, would it be possible to have one subdomain (or the primary domain) point to the main Groupee directory, but have another subdomain point to the separate storage/hosting account? Or, put more simply with an example:

forums.scn.org -> Groupee's server
hosting.scn.org -> External server

(I'm looking to have this done without domain redirects or pointers, but to have the "main" domain be relegated to Groupee, most likely, and the subdomain hosted somewhere else.)

Or is this a bit too complicated for normal shared hosting accounts?

Yes, you can do this. Groupee would set your board up as forums.scn.org and then you would make an A record DNS entry pointing that the IP of your Groupee server.
