Pardon my jumping in, but I'd like to expand the question by asking if it is also possible to widen the banner to the page width, or place another banner in the empty white space to the right.

The easiest way to do this sort of thing is to create your own HTML for the header and put that in the custom HTML area of your style you are using, and then turning off the title graphic option.
For example, you can see the basic header I have setup on my site
Jeremy is right. The easiest way is to turn off the title image completely. Then in the section of your Styles -> Custom HTML, enter the HTML code for the image you want into the section called "After Opening Body Tag" As the name suggests it will appear at the top of your page and can be aligned any way you want.
