I know this is a dumb question - but can someone explain to me how feeds are different from content islands, and why I might want to implement these on my site?

RSS is a special XML file format. There are RSS readers available that interpret these files. If your members have an RSS client, they can subscribe to your RSS feeds, and automatically be notified when something is added to the feed (in the case of Groupee Community RSS feeds, they would be notified when, for example, someone posts a new topic). In addition, since RSS is just a special XML file, you can parse the RSS feed on a website to create dynamic content based on your community. Hope that helps. For more info, see the Wikipedia article on RSS.

One of the coolest things about RSS feeds is that because it’s a standard, you see lots of integration between multiple products. For instance if you are using Firefox as your browser, it will automatically detect if there are any RSS feeds on the page and create a little icon in the status bar. If you click on the icon you can subscribe to any of the feeds on that page. Firefox then creates what it calls “Live Bookmarks” which create internet bookmarks that change as the RSS feed changes. Assuming you’re using Firefox, you can see an example of this on our main forums page at http://community.groupee.com/eve/forums. Look for the little orange icon on the right side of the status bar.
