I've changed a MOW (mess 'o wordlets), some for Member continuity, real estate, or just plain branding reasons.

Some of the wordlets I routinely change include:
  • Generic community... changed to Aantares. Branding, branding, branding!

  • Moderator... changed to Host. IMO, a 'moderator' is a passive babysitter... and titled tattler, if you will, whereas a 'Host' is an active facilitator, someone who has a vested interest in the forum's success.

  • Graemlin... changed to Graemlin/Smilie. I'm trying to re-educate my folks to the use of graemlin instead of smilie, but it's a slow go. I use the dual terminology to transition 'em painlessly.

  • MySpace... changed to MyProfile The word 'space' is too generic for my folks... 'profile' tells 'em EXACTLY what they need to know to access All Things That Is Their's. Wink

  • New tab... changed to Post tab. Again, to many the word NEW could mean NEW postings, NEW Members, NEW stuff... new just about anything, ya' know? But POST... ahhhhh, POST means exactly what it says.

  • Lower-case member... changed to capitalized Member. It's an honor thing, ya' know? On my site, 'Member' is a proper name --the title by which any person or thing is known or designated; a distinctive specific appellation, whether of an individual or a class-- just like Admin and Host. Big Grin

So what have YOU changed...?

At evedev, we've changed the following:

  • All occurances of the phrase Private Topics have been changed to Private Messages.
  • Login button text changed from 'LOGIN' to 'Login'.
  • 'New Since your Last Visit' changed to 'New Since Your Last Visit'.
  • 'Homepage URL' changed to 'Eve URL' (since it is evedev.com, after all).

>> All occurances of the phrase Private Topics have been changed to Private Messages.
I did just the reverse... changed Private Message to Private Topic. Wink

>> Login button text changed from 'LOGIN' to 'Login'.
Me too... in fact, I changed all occurences of 'Log in' to 'Login.'

>> 'New Since your Last Visit' changed to 'New Since Your Last Visit'.
Good typo catch... me too. Now.

>> 'Homepage URL' changed to 'Eve URL' (since it is evedev.com, after all).
      Very appropriate. Wink

Well I'm not as talented as you guys as far as CSS and XML and all those programming type tweaks but I think there's a lot you can do with eve (and ubb.x before it) to personalise it to your community.

For example, if you check out my forums at http://vitalgamer.com/eve/ubb.x I have added the following 'enhancements':

1. Redone the corner graphics to match my darker background

2. Changed wordlets for members to "active service members" and guests to "civilians"

3. In the Categories & Forums view, added images under -some- Forum descriptions beneath the forum name text to add a little pizazz and interest. (See the Jokes and Movies forums for example)

4. In forum view, added a box indicating that particular forum's standard restrictions or allowables to each forum. See the Open Discussion forum for an example. My members find it helpful when I state in this area what the attachment upload allowance is, whether html is allowed, whether polls are permitted etc.,etc.

5. Created a very large custom set of Avatars of an unusual landscape size (140 x 80) which my members especially like.

Nice avatars. And I agree that customizing the corner images is a great tweak. I customized the ones at evedev in the manner that Tacks had customized them at the old ubb.x dev.

I've tweaked a few wordlets in my time -- nothing too drastic, but here is one that might be useful to others:
