Wow Dan and Steve - these are both great communities. Dan, I'm really impressed with the number of members on your board. Steve - What a GREAT service you are providing! I read some of the posts and wished I could go back in time and have something like this when I was in highschool!

Most of what we provide is for our rec program, ages 4 through 16 but I you can see we also provide forums for the high school too. We have about 4000 kids that participate with us.

Sometimes it gets out of hand with gossip, personal attacks etc. but we watch it pretty close. Our members love it and it really helps get people to our web site.

That's great Steve! I wish my school had done something like this. How did you choose the moderators for each forum? Is all the moderation done from one central location?

I liked your board too Dan! smile I didn't realize what a swingin' community you had going! tee-hee.

It's pretty basic and I really don't know whether the black works that well...opinions welcome!

Great design Blaze. Very classy! (the color scheme works well... I wouldn't change a thing)

I'm another UBB client like yourself so you can take anything I say with a grain of salt.

The only change I would make is to redo most of the icons and smilies to customize them with the look and feel of the board. Example, I would replace the lightbulb icons (topic on/off) with perfume bottle graphics... add some icons as smilies for the various lines of perfume (monogram (sp?) icons) etc...

As far as marketing is concerned, I would approach vendors for Estee Lauder and small retail perfume shops with static sites and offer to have them use the forum as their own.

You should also look into trade associations, trade publications (for potential coverage) and legislation relevant to the perfume/cosmetics industry. The do a lot of political lobbying and their sticky issue is typically with the environmental/labor concerns. A close friend of mine used to be a VP for Davidoff...its a very interesting industry behind the scenes beyond the consumer front. You may want to expand the scope of your topics beyond simply Estee Lauder i.e. how perfumes are made, trade issues, regulations, advertising and PR campaigns... etc.

Feel free to refer some business to CG in exchange for my "consulting" fee wink

Hi Blaze,

Thanks for sharing your UBB™ with us! I have mentioned this before -- although I am a fan of black backgrounds on web pages/bulletin boards, some users find it to be too harsh on their eyes. Just something to keep in mind. I agree with Capitol Grilling that some customization would look great on your site, but the standard lightbulbs are highly effective just as they are. smile On the contrary though, I think a little color would be nice to see in there. When I think of perfumes, I think of exotic colors and locations, etc. Perhaps this is just from reading too many fashion magazines though... razz You have done a great job of dividing your board into useful forums for your users.

Nice example!

Thanks Natalia and CG, I think you are right about it needing some color and customization.

One thing I can't figure out how to fix is the fact that the vertical dividers between the "register, search, faq, forum home" links are black on the black background. they seem to be tied to the font color on the page. Is there any way to change just their color so they'll show up?

Thanks again for all your input!

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Uh. That's not very easy to change, I don't think you can seperate the colors without hacking it.

Unfortunately what Judd is saying is true. There isn't a clear way in the Control Panel at this time to change these colors.

I kinda thought that might be the answer. Maybe I'll have to get in there and see if I can find out how to hack my way around the problem.

I'll post again when I have spiced it up a bit. Thanks.

Hi all

Just had mine for 4 weeks now and I love it, the programme that is, I am going to be upgrading to 6.3 but am a bit conserned about the hacks I have put on.

Click here for my Bulletin Board

As this will be my first time at upgrading I do not know what it all involves, does the new files overwrite the ones I already have? if so .......I have a question...

Q. When I upgrade do I have to re-hack all the hacks eg (IM)Instant message, Calendar etc?

smile smile

Yes. frown

If you're dependent on those hacks you should also check to see that those hacks you are using have been ported to the version you will be stepping up to. Often times they need tweaking and a new version will be released.

In response to your other comments, normally when you upgrade you would upload the new files over all your old ones. However, you should only replace the Variable files you are instructed to in the upgrade instructions. If you replace any of the variable files by mistake you will loose your community's settings.

Also keep in mind that Infopop cannot support hacked communities.

Hi George,

Cool site! I actually really want to learn how to knit so I might have to refer back to this once I get my act together! smile

Have you ever thought about condensing a few of your forums? That is pretty much the only I had while looking through.. although each forum looks like it receives plenty of traffic on its own, sometimes a large amount of forums can be intimidating for new users. It looks like you have a real lively community though -- congrats!!!

Hi Natalia

Thanks for your kind remarks.

Any suggestions are more that welcome, it is really hard to put them into any kind of section but I could do with some help, please join and ask anything to do with machine knitting, most of our mods are Passap orientated, as we think this is the best machine and easiest to work with. big grin Then we would. big grin

Thx again

George

Looks great overall, though I'd have to agree with Natalia's suggestion. People often think that creating tons of forums will create more traffic, but it often impedes it. A new user will have no idea where to go first and will find it frustrating to move between tons of forums. I like the scheme, though! Keep up the good work! smile
