We run a bulletin board for a large number of students and fear that inactivity is due to the fact that students don't want their username attached to their post.

Is there a way a student could post and choose not to display their name on the board? Obviously, the moderator would still be able to see the author of the message.

Just as you post as "redtooth" users could choose a unique 'anonymous' Public Display Name and a mod or an admin could see their Login Name and email address. As long as you required valid campus-only mail addresses approved by the admin you could allow freedom to speak your mind while also maintaining the balance of saftey in the public interest, I believe.

I do know that in the latest version - 6.4.1 there is an option to Allow users to change their display name - which, when set to Yes, allows them to choose a display name from their profile AND to choose a Display Name when registering for the board.

I would recommend that you put them in a special group so that you can review their registration information prior to allowing them free reign on the boards so that they do not get confused about login vs. display but otherwise you can upgrade to the current version if your Members Area access is current.
