I would like to introduce Only Takes A Click, a UK not-for-profit organisation dedicated to help stop child internet pornography and exploitation.

Only Takes A Click has a strong mission and aims and hopes to promote these in many ways including introducing best practice into the internet arena. The first ‘project’ we are undertaking is trying to combat the grooming of under 18’s in internet chat rooms, instant messengers and, believe it or not, by online forums. With this in mind we are offering chat moderation services to all internet sites offering under 18’s chat room access, access to instant messengers or online forums.

“One in five children who use computer chat rooms has been approached over the internet by pedophiles“.

“89% of all sexual solicitations were made in either chat rooms or instant messages”.

Introducing such a service to your site would not only show you dedication to stopping such ‘online grooming’ from growing but it would also protect your brand two-fold as we also check for comments or words that go against your brand rules.

Who undertakes the moderating ?

Basically Only Takes A Click has recruited and is still recruiting a team of volunteers that will undertake the moderation. All volunteers will in due course be Criminal Record Checked, by due to government delays at CRB this is being delayed, to ensure that no previous related convictions are present but also to ensure that the right individuals are recruited. These volunteers have been given several books or literature and will also attend up to 5 training courses throughout the year to ensure that they are meeting your requirements and highlighting any problems. Obviously they will anonymously supervised by a full-time member of Only Takes A Click at regular intervals.

How do you moderate ?

We look out for the tell-tale signs that pedophiles use plus the obvious hints, some pedophiles simply say they are 2x / 3x and ask under age children to perform sexual acts. To help protect your brand we also use a pre-defined, but customisable, list of word exclusions which would be checked by your organisation and by each excluded work or phrase the action can be defined, example : “is crap” – replace with “is c—p” or “sex” – delete whole sentence containing word.

What about if you already use moderators ?

Then we can use your moderators in place to ensure that this good work continues and introduce agreeable guidelines and supervision. One international organisation uses moderators to moderate chat but no supervision or checks are in place, if this is the case you may ask what is the point of having these moderators in place ? If you do not feel that are service would be beneficial because you already moderator then we would still like to work with you to develop best practice and guidelines which will hopefully become standard across many sites and organisations.
