Hi everybody,

I'm researching some of the non-traditional ways that people might use community: i.e. classifieds, online databases, etc.

If anybody is using their boards in a way they may find "non-traditional" (i.e. lively discussion!), I would love it if you would post here or email me at natalia@infopop.com. Smile

Thank you!

We're a small town coffee shop. We encourage thread drift. We have little or no moderation other than the fact that you must register to post.

IMHO if you become too focused and tightly regulated you always offend someone. If there are no rules there is nothing to fuss about.

Anyway, non-traditional uses? I have no clue. Most news websites have feedback forums that are tightly regulated and moderated. How about a "free-for-all" media critique site with links to all major news services? Nah...it would never work... Wink

This might be a bit of non-traditional use for content island, not a total solution, just a snapshot of board activities for mobile surfers ...

Just in case the HTML does not work here:

So far, I have used UBB.Threads in a non traditional way on one site. And I'm currently developing a second.

The first is www.atlantasingleschorus.com.
UBBThreads is the "back end". All content (home page, FAQ's etc...) is pulled from "posts" and generated on the fly. For the admin to add an item to the FAQ, they simply make a post in a hidden forum and the pages generate new content from the Threads Database.

User registration has been expanded there to offer a 4 page registrion signup form covering all of their musical experience.

The second is not yet live, but I expect to have it online in a few weeks. It's a Travel Agencies' website, and the threads database will be used to serve the content and allow them to easily edit part of their site simply by editing posts.
I am also builing in a database to search for and display travel destinations and specials.... all driven by a UBBThreads Backend. Smile This will probably be the most extensive and will really give a small, 2 person travel agency a powerful web presence. Big Grin

UBBThreads can be so much more than a message board. Smile

I have finally launched the travel agency site using UBB.Threads as a back end.

It's not all done - but all the specials and info that you see everywhere on the site - are entered and edited like posts... with some heavy modifications to the scripts.

www.MySeaAdventures.com

Not only do they have "specials" online etc... but you can browse every cruise line - and see every cruise ship. They have photos for every ship as well.

There is also an index of Destinations and Itineraries... although they are still keying some of that info in.

Great question Natalia!

I would like to create a board / site where people can post-upload or link to:

1) text 2) images 3) sound files

and create their own "multimedia" sort of like this example:

inersha.com/wellbein/marg0103.htm

Eventually I would like to be able to put the entire collection on CD that people can view even when off-line (is that possible with InfoPop discussions?).

Related to the above, I want to do more with people submitting music samples, it's OK that no script can be posted, links are fine I figure. A "MUSIC-ON/OFF" option is what I'm lookin fer from the software..

Bet you've got a great collection of "non-traditional" boards! I'd love to see it.. he he..

Love peace and chicken grease, Teo Wink

We have launched an online adult school of mysteries. It is a paid subscription, paid through PayPal. With every monthly payment, the new lesson opens up. We have this regulated through locked forums, and permission status.

Within the forums for the respective sessions, the Admins, and moderators (teachers of those subjects) have loaded many additional threads with resource info, links, and other helpful information.

Once a student has passed through a certain level, they have the option of going in and posting their helpful information for those who follow them.

It is non-traditional, and one that I could not have accomplished with the UBB Classic, which I already own at a different site.

Tell me more about this school. I am interested in what you teach. I may have a lot to offer.
