I'd really like to hear what others have in their policies and guidelines. I've just created my first site and need to set up my guidelines. While I know I can't possibly address every situation, I know that not having the experience, I won't even realize some things I should put in my guidelines.

What do you have in your policy/guidelines? What do you feel is important? Would anyone care to share a sample set of guidelines?

Obviously, our rules are different because this is a commercial site, but you might take a look at our own rules & regs here for a jumping off point.

To see them, click the Tools tab, then click "Help". At the bottom of the list, you'll see "Forum Rules, Policies, and Disclaimers".

My board is under revision and is not available for posting. But, look at the home page for ideas.

Look at the "three inportant issues" box.

I wrote a set of rules or guidelines or whatever you prefer to call them for the (now defunct) PlaneBusiness Talk forum. Feel free to take a look. Smile

Some of it is taken from other sites and even Infopop's standard set of rules/disclaimers. But it's also very oriented toward the site and a number of specific problems that we were experiencing at the time I wrote the document.

Those are great guidelines (even if the site is now defunct!). It helps to personalize them, and I think it was especially helpful that you speak about each of your moderators. It's nice to know who you're talking to! Smile

Thanks Natalia. I really feel its important to know something about moderators, especially on a site like PlaneBusiness where the users were often very intense and had stong opinions. The level of moderating was quite high and I think it helped to have some idea who was doing that moderating.

I'm not sure it made a heck of a lot of difference to our users though. The rules were implimented just about 10 months before the forum was shut down. But it was still a good document to have around to point to when folks acted up. It seemed like the other administrator and moderators really appreciated having those rules to back up their work on the forum.

Here is a link to our board rules and guidelines. Admittedly, we probably have the most tightly moderated community in the online automotive catagory. The membership really appreciates the structure, allowing an environment free of the typical B.S. seen in a lot of online communities.

A few key points I think are important:

Mission Statement
Community Core Values
Member Expectations and Responsibilites
and finally,
Reminding the new user that use of the board is a privilege, not a right. A privilege that can be revolked if the board rules and guidelines are now followed.
