With the new version, I enabled the Time limited editing and set it to 30 minutes. (For those who aren't familiar with it, it gives the poster 30 minutes to make any changes, then it locks down the post.)

Well, a few loudmouth users raised holy hell, calling me every name in the book (mostly names involving German politics from the '40s) and started the usual holy war that arises any time I change something on the forum.

My position is that users should not be able to rewrite history. Their position is that its their post and they should be able to make changes, even if its a day or three later.

Comments?

Incidentally, my forum is heavily moderated. We don't tolerate any sort of profanity or personal attacks. We don't permit advertising. We don't even allow users to publicly go on tirades criticizing the moderating policies. Off topic posts are moved, closed, or deleted. As a result, we have an extraordinarily high signal/noise ration and most users like the professional, well-run atmosphere we provide. But there are always those "constitutionally challenged idiots" who think they can sue me for violating their first amendment rights.

Before the time limits I didn't even allow it! I used to say, "Treat your posts like e-mail or newsgroup postings....once it's sent there is no taking back or changing your words" and that shut most people up.

With the new limits I've set it to 15 minutes.

The main reason I didn't allow it previously and why I have the time limit on it now is because of abuse. I had jokers post a benign question that would get yes or no answers and then change the question to, "Are you gay?" Stupid stuff like that. Also there would be a user every once in awhile that would get paranoid or mad with someone on the community and would erase all the text in their posts going back months. This ruined a lot of topics forever.

IMO, with post preview and the ability to edit their message for at least 15 minutes its not a valid complaint.

This also begs the question.."Should edited posts be brought to the top like a reply does?"

Prior to 6.4, I allowed editing, but not deletion. Now I allow editing for 10 minutes without the "edited" phrase, after that, the editing is noted as it used to be.

*So far*, I haven't had a problem like you're describing, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to limit them to 30 minutes, and tell them why. They can always post an "addendum" if need be.

I'd also send whoever did it a VERY stern "one time only" warning.

Graeme - I didn't have to advertise it - they figured it out within 60 minutes of it being enabled.

Maybe automotive enthusiasts are a different breed. Granted, there may be 1,000 good, benign, happy users for every 1 user that insists on calling me a Nazi, but those are the minority that stir everyone else up.

Every time I implement a new feature, I get a few who will try to crucify me for it.

No - it would completely change the order of the thread.

Than University Engineering students? *shrug*

It helps that I know 95% of my membership in real life and they know that if they complain unreasonably, they'll get the "even though this site is for you, it's hosted on MY server, MY UBB license, etc.., and it's free (for you), so tough" attitude. big grin

Not within the thread but at the topic listing level. smile
