Do you guys clean up threads that have sloppy UBB Code, double posts, typos, spacing errors, etc.? We seem to be plaqued with that (especially with UBB Code). I generally remove double posts and occasionally try to clean up the bad UBB Code that I see but I find it's quite the pain. I'm pretty sure our moderators only remove double posts, if I don't get to them first.

Do any of you contact users to let them know about an issue (typo, UBB Code) with a post? We installed a hack to not display the edited by message if a moderator or admin edits a message.

37 thousand users, 65 thousand posts in the .classic forum with another 22 thousand sitting in an archive that never did get moved here. If I cleaned up every one of those posts I'd get even less sleep then I do now.

Beyond that.... my typing is poor enough that I don't consider myself perfect enough to be editing other folks' typos.

I don't make a point of looking for posts that need cleanup, but if I come across one, I'll take care of it.

I seldom bother correcting typos, but I'll fix broken links or broken UBB Code, remove double posts, and move mis-posted topics to the appropriate forum.

I don't contact members about such things unless they do something that really bugs me. smile It's quicker just to fix it myself.

Is that hack you mentioned available on UBBDev? If not can you post it?

I pretty much just go through and remove duplicate posts, on rare occasions I'll clean up a post, usually when the UBB code is so bad you can't tell what is their response and what they are quoting.

But I do have one forum where I require dates in the topic title and if they don't include it I will go in and edit the post to change the title as required. So that hack would come in really handy for those types of things.

Most of our guys know how to work the UBB codes, and if they don't, they're not shy to ask. As for the rest of it, the typos and misspellings, who cares? As long as I know what people are talking about, that's good enough for me.

I clean the posts on a regular basis, especially if a thread is going to be archived.

I used to clean up posts with the ubb code tag, if they made the page wider. But now that I have that fixed, I no longer edit.

I can't stand posts that have broken ubbcode, horrific spelling, duplicates, or where the user hit return at the end of every line. When I come across those posts on my board I'll usually take a moment to correct them.

In the file ubb_edit_post.cgi, the line

$message .= qq(<br /> <br /> <small>[ $edit_date: $vars_wordlets{edit_wording} $pubname ]</small> );

Needs to be replaced with this:

$is_one = &is_admin_or_mod($in{f}, @user_profile);

if ($is_one ne 'true') { $message .= qq(<br /> <br /> <small>[ $edit_date: $vars_wordlets{edit_wording} $pubname ]</small> ); }

Will that work retroactively (on the old posts) or just affect any future posts I edit?

Just future ones.

Retroactively changing posts would be difficult. frown

We have issues of censorship on our board. In other words, many people come to our board instead of our competitor's board because of our "hands-off" attitude.
Our group is very diverse including young "punk" kids and old "family" folks and we go WAY out of our way to make ALL of them feel welcome.
As a result we only edit curse words and personal attacks and even the personal attacks get left if the topic is gonna die, unless the attackee complains.

Occasionally, I'll fix an IMG post if it's obvious what the problem is. Generally this involves actually downloading the pic, hosting it myself and changing the URL... (gee what a nice moderator I am) big grin

Anyway... We use an administrator nickname that does NO speaking. He simply edits the curse words or personal attacks. Since he is not perceived as a real person, (his name is DuneTroll) then he doesn't generally catch any flak for edits.
