Tuesday evening Pacific Time August 20th we will be updating to the 2.3 version code base.

Important: This upgrade affects the Egypt /0 OpenTopicâ„¢ service only.

The new version requires large scale reorganization of the tables and so the service will not be available for several hours. Will you let your members and developers know that this is a planned rather than unplanned outage?

We will also be posting notification of the upgrade in place of the usual 'database unavailable' page.

Michael,

Will a similar procedure be required when it comes to the system wide upgrade to 2.3 for this and other clusters?

dharrison - we'll know after the beta upgrade what kind of time will be involved for the table restructuring. This is the part of the upgrade that will necessitate downtime. There will be some certainly but the exact amount we've yet to determine.

Yikes, I wish that we had more notice. I did not see this announcement until just now. I hope that the installation goes well. Wise.

wisey - this doesn't affect you since you are on /4 cluster. The upgrade only affects /0 (the beta cluster).

Hello All

Last evening Peter Bryant decided to delay the upgrade to the beta servers while some final performance checks were made. The next window for upgrade will be the evening of August 21st but please check for confirmation in system news in your OpenTopic control panel or by subscribing to this topic.

NOTE: these upgrades apply to the BETA cluster /0 Egypt. Other production clusters will not be affected by this upgrade.

Thanks for your patience.

We've resolved a few annoying performance issues and have scheduled the upgrade to the 2.3 codebase for Thursday evening PST August 22nd.

This upgrade will affect only the Egypt /0 cluster. Other production sites will not be upgraded at this time.

The update is still in progress. There is one field update that is being excruciatingly slow. As soon as that statement is complete, we'll be back in business.

Well the update statement is _still_ going. It needs to complete before we start the app back up.

For the other clusters we'll do things a different way, since, excluding this particular update, the process was running for a more succinct 4 hours.

Claude, I wish I knew! It's literally a single (big!) update statement we've issued that has not completed. When its finished we're all go!

However, I don't know how to estimate how far through the update Oracle is right now.

What I can tell everyone else, though, is that we've started doing some code changes so that with future deployments of 2.3 the app will be able to cope with the data in either the old or new format (meaning that the update can take place in the background).

Can you guys set the postcount to 0 for everyone after this update and just blame it on a bad query? It would be fun.

Thanks for the hard work you guys. We're anxiously awaiting the results.

We've got a herd of people on IRC slowly getting the DTs for their openfora... no rush, obviously, but do you have a status report?

For some types of updates, I've found that a quick manual centerpoint search should find the progress of the update with good accuracy within 25 tries for any realistically (as in <1TB) sized database, assuming that there is a by-eye way to tell which records have been updated and which have not and assuming it's not an all-or-nothing transaction... but even there, the transaction logs may be helpful in at least estimating a time to complete.

I know exactly what you're going through - I had an upgrade on a live product once that should have taken 3 hours that ended up taking 17. By the end of it, I could barely think straight. You have my sympathies.

Thanks Aeirould

As you can imagine we have our own version of the DT's going on here. Peter Bryant is monitoring the progress as best can be done. There is one last query ....[I'll point Peter to your suggestion].

Please convey our Infopop sympathies to folks on IRC dying to get into the Lounge ...

NT/2K Mojo forum too. big grin

Seriously though, major thanks for all the work you guys are/have been doing. Especially on the nested quotes that came a while ago. I don't remember if I posted in any of the OpenTopic threads on Ars about them, so I'll say thank you here. Much appreciated.

Also, I'll give you a cookie if the Ars forums are back this afternoon. wink
