i see where you can create content islands and grab the code, but exactly how do you put it into your html? is there a control panel feature for this?

The code generated should be in the form of an HTML < script > element. You just paste it in your HTML page and then the content island will appear via JavaScript.

maybe i'm confused on the purpose of content islands... are they generally used to place into non-forum pages? what's their purpose?

forgive my ignorance, but i'm just starting to setup a bb.

the general idea is to have a mix of free and paid services on a site, both in forum and out. if you need an example of this, visit arstechnica.com. this is site specific of course.

as for the content islands
think of a listing of popular threads on an otherwise static page. they show people who don't venture into the forums what's there right now, hopefully something sparks their interest that gets them to visit the forums for the first time.

from my experience, a forum member tends to be a longer-term member of a site. I've stayed the longest at the sites I'm active with the forum. another site I left the forums of, I hardly visit anymore. longer term members are more likely to pay (but data <> what I see). I'm considering paying for cnn.com at this point to get the video feeds.

thanks for your helpful reply--i was just using the forum as is (as a homepage, too) so the content islands didn't make sense... from the example you gave, i now have a better idea of how to incorporate the ubb forum into the overall site experience. thanks!
