Howard,
For OpenTopic our backup plans are fairly straight foward. Database: The machine runs with fault tolerant power supplies and a RAID 1+0 disk configuration. If the machine ever fails we can use either the nightly exports or the hot backups to recover the database on another machine. We do have backup machines for recovery. The servlet engines/web servers/firewalls/switches: All the machinery here is fault tolerant. If one machine goes down it is not even noticeable to end user. We do have backup machines for recovery. Backups: All data is backed up to a tape via a datavault system. Colocation: Our colocation facility has diesel generators that will kick in after 4 seconds of power outage and last 21 days without a refuel (which can happen via heliport). To survive the 4 seconds of downtime there are battery power UPS systems attached to all of our machines. We also pool our bandwidth connection over 6 Tier 1 ISPS, and have 2 seperate connections to these ISPs Hope that helps. -Barry |
