We're using a custom template for most of our forum pages. Just can't seem to override the main page. The "Categories" page doesn't seem to affect any forum pages.

Hello,

Could you provide some more details about the exact problem you're having? I have a feeling that you eventually will want to open a support ticket for this issue. You could either cut to the chase and start that process (go to http://infopop.com/support/index.php), or first share some more details here. It's up to you.

Hi. Sorry for the ambiguity.

From the Conttrol Panel I click Templates. From the next page I click Edit Current Template (Infopop III (Current)). The next page lists the Page Types. For most page types I have selected a custom XSL file that I've modified. One page type is "Categories Page." The description is "This page presents a site's categories and forums." Overriding this page type doesn't seem to affect the categories page on our website, however.

I was wondering if I needed to upload a custom XML file with a certain name... like infopop3.xsl, in order to overwrite an existing file. So far I've been careful to give them new names in order to not overwrite any existing stylesheets. But there seem to be page types that can't be assigned custom XSL files. Our main forum page and categories page are not getting the custom XSL file. Just wondering how to specify those pages to uuse the new file I've made. They don't seem to be represented in the Page Types list.

It does sound slike there's some amiss here. A ticket with control panel access info will let either Jonmark or Evan check things out,

A quick word about the XSL in general.

As you edit on the 3.0 series, remember that any custom XSL there will not carry over to eve if that is the direction whre you are headed. It's always wisest to make that move first and then edit the files in the upgraded version. That way you will have all the new features of eve.

What [generally] are you trying to acoomplish with the custom XSL? Sometimes it's possible to achieve the same end through other means.

It's a simple addition of a form to allow Google searches. For other purposes we often add links/etc to pages at the top by supplying HTML to be inserted after the opening Body tag. But we have a lot of space available to the right of our logo which in this case I like using rather than pushing the forums further down the page.

If you would like us to take a look at your stylesheets and site to see if there is a issue that may need out attention please put in a support ticket and provide the administrator login information for your site in it.

Though thinking about it, if feels like there has got to be a way to do this without requiring custom XSL. Custom XSL is a pretty extreme measure and should be the last resort. The reasoning for his statement is simple:

By customizing the stylesheets you are ensuring that every new feature that we come out with will not be supported by your custom XSL. Every new feature we create has some element of it that relies on XSL to function. So everytime a release goes out you will have to update the latest stylesheets with your changes. I used to do this for my site and got tired of updating them really quickly.

Just some food for thought,
