How can I give a user (or a security group) the 'Change Style Settings' right?
Thanks! |

Hi TObject,
The ability to change style settings is controlled by the "Change Display Options" right from the "Site Security" (or "All Site Wide Settings") page in the control panel. You can assign this right to groups only (so just make sure the members that you want to have the right are in the groups you give access to). The reasoning behind the "Display Options" naming is that the styles affect the display of your site. Additionally, the new display options sets affect the display, so users with this right will also be able to update the display options sets. I hope this helps! Regards, Brian Lenz |

It would be nice, if a moderator of the forum could have control over only his or her forum display options (just so they don't accidentally screw up the rest of the site if not for anything else), but the site-wide option will do for me.
Thank you. P.S. There is something wrong with this forum, when I cut and paste message body from Microsoft word; the first apostrophe (or whatever character Microsoft Word uses to display |

Allowing a forum moderator (or more precisely, a user with the change forum settings right) to change the display options for just their forum becomes an issue when you've got a style or other display options being shared across multiple forums. In this case, if we allowed a moderator to change the display options for one forum, the change may be effective across other forums or even the entire site. To avoid this case, we have broken the rights into different site wide rights (change forum settings and change display options).
Can you extrapolate more on what problem you are having with pasting from Microsoft Word? It appears that the end of your message got cut off. Regards, Brian Lenz |

quote: This is exactly my problem – also looks like this forum went down after I posted that message with cut off text. Strangely (or fortunately) I don’t have that problem over at my forum. It looks like some of the extended characters (the equivalents to ' and " used by Microsoft Word) treated as separators by something (form processor?) on this site. I think you should look into this, because it may also be a security hole. UI am going to try to use the U+2019 character in this message, and see if I get cut off again: The Right Single Quotation Mark Goes Here -->’<-- There it was. |

I can't reproduce it anymore.

Hmm, it definitely seems something fishy is going on here. Have you tried posting with your word doc pasted again? Can you just do a copy and a paste with the single character that seems to be causing the problem? Were you just editing a normal word doc from word or was it an html or txt file? I'm not really sure where to start with this one, so any extra information you can provide would be helpful.
Based on the logs I've looked at, I don't think that it was your post that caused the board to go down. The ops team may be able to provide more info as to what went wrong, but it looks to me like it was a database server problem. Regards, Brian Lenz |

I usually type whatever I try to post in Microsoft Word, and then copy and paste it to the new message body. Let me try it again. In the third message in this thread I was trying to post “’”. If the bug appeared again you wouldn’t be able to read this last sentence.

Nope, I can’t reproduce it now. Ether somebody already fixed the problem, or the cut off messages were caused by the board going down, and not the other way around... Sorry for the false alarm.

Is it also possible that the entire message didn't get pasted in its entirety to your web browser? Either way, please let me know if it happens to you again. So did it just happen the one time?

TObject, are you using Netscape? I've noticed that it does not always send the whole form data to our application.

I already have different Style Settings for each forum. How would I limit each moderator to changing only the style settings for their own forum? Thanks, Robert |

Hi Robert,
As I said in my earlier post, this is not possible because of the ability to share styles among forums. Your current setup may have a separate style for each forum, but it's possible to share a single style among multiple forums. As a result, a style being shared across multiple forums would not be able to be edited by a standard forum moderator, whereas a style used by a single forum would be able to be modified by a standard forum moderator. To avoid confusion, we eliminate this problem altogether by specifying a security group to modify a style and a separate security group to modify a forum. Perhaps, in the future, we could allow security groups to be defined per style, in which case, you could give a group access rights to modify one particular style. I believe that this would achieve the result you desire. I'll add this one to my "wish list." Regards, Brian Lenz |

Hi Robert. Having a style dedicated to a forum would be a good idea... I'll have a think about how we could do it.
BTW: Is it a problem where forum mods are just not realising they are affect styles on other forums? Or is it that they just aren't concerned about changing the style in other peoples' forums? |

Hi Peter,
quote: The problem is the accidental changing of the wrong color style. We have 20+ people with their own forums and own style (none of theirs are shared). It's still not clear to me exactly how she copied over another style. Most are teenage girls and they have been extremely good. Over 200 members and 3000+ posts and I've only had to ban one member (a guy in his thirties) in the year the forums have been up; delete one post and edit another for marginal content (not including unbelievable spelling errors!). This was the first problem any of them caused while editing their own style. She was new and very enthusiastic. (Some of the color schemes they come up with are truely bizzare.) Here is an e-mail I received from her: quote: I also checked with the other 2 admins on the site - Jackie and Elizabeth, and they haven't had to delete any posts. So, all told, compared to what I've seen going on other forums, we have been very lucky. Especially given the damage any of the 20+ could have done. Robert As I raced at top speed across the top of the plateau, I turned to her and replied, [This message was edited by Robert Jon Religa on 23 Jan 02 at 11:44 PM.] |
