What's going to be the limit for file attachments? At what point will the software refuse any more attachments from users? I know I can set the per limit msg, but 300k per message can add up in a frickin' hurry!

The restrictions and limits are set on the forums setting page. If you want you can remove the file size limit entirely.

Really? All I saw was "upload limit of 300Kb". I took that to mean "per message". If it's not, then it needs to be reworded.

If it means 300kb total file upload space, than that is bad - because someone can spam upload a giant file, and kill the feature for everyone.

Had another thought.

Is there a reason why we can't file attach the picture for the profile? If the board allows attachments at all, I would think you'd allow that, too.

Furthermore, will there be any kind of mechanism to prevent people from putting massive individual images? Something on the order of a jpg that comes in say 5k under the pre-set limit, and is some insanely large picture size like 2400x1250 - something that will really screw up displays, not to mention take forever to download.

I think there should be some tighter restrictions on image attachments - if you want me to work up some of my thoughts on this, let me know.

The file limit applies per message. Check out the forum settings page for other restrictions.

We may also set an overall upload limit option on the site (so you can keep the combined total of all the attachments uploaded to the server in check). You'll then have to prune attachments.

Your thoughts on file attachment restrictions would be appreciated. We realise that attachments can be a dangerous thing to end users of the board. Thats why they're disabled by default and when turned on default to <300K image uploads (no zips or other files). Using the security settings you could allow any file to be uploaded but restrict who can do that to, say, Joe and Ted (e.g. UBB updates can be posted directly to the board by certain individuals).

Hey I wrote this software. Be nice about it.

Well, the immediate problem I see is someone deciding to spam the board with lots and lots and LOTS of images, thereby filling up whatever limit is set. OK, 300k per message - but there has to be an upper limit set. If someone posts 300k per message, that'll add up in a DAMN hurry.

I also think it REALLY needs to be more clear what the limit means. The text I see on screen right now as I add this says:

quote:
Attachments: Images are allowed. There is an upload limit of 300Kb.

OK, to me that's not clear. I think it should say 300Kb for this message. If the admin defines a "master limit" that probably should also be posted - also if that hard limit is reached, that issue will have to be addressed as a fail condition, I would think.

Also, if you're going to allow uploading of zip files, can there be a facility for a virus scanner? If yes, than whose responsibility will it be? Mine, as forum leader, or Infopop's, since this is a hosted software package? Either way, there should be some sort of dialog box alerting people to the dangers of downloading/using unknown archive files.

It would also be helpful (although I don't know how you could do it) if the board could prevent "display problems" with images. Perhaps look and see what the image size is, and if it's larger than "X", don't display the thing inline, make it a pure attachment. That make any sense? Any of this make sense?
