I just love this lil tool. Click the lower right hand corner icon to see a sample web page layout with basic naviation. Choose colors and work realtime to see your selections. Grab the hex numbers from the page.

Web page color selector

Enjoy!

Hey Amanda,

That is cool!!! At first I was playing around thinking, "that's not so cool." Then I read the rest of your message about the webpage.

This would be a cool type of tool to develop for actual applications. Can you imagine???! I would love to work on web pages like this.

mmmmmmmm

Thought this would help for those who might want a quicker glimpse of how useful this tool is. Props to Mundi Design for developing the tool:

This is a tool to tell time and date (in Flash) - and the interaction is nice. A bit distracting but well done. It would be an interesting screensaver....

My favorite screen capture tool:

Snagit

Ever since Celeste pointed this out to me, I've been addicted! It's shareware, but well worth the small fee.

That was probably the best $10 I spent on the web. The autoscroll feature and the output to file selection is great. I use this tool about 3-4 times a day!

Thanks Rosemary!

I have two new favorite tools.

I've been using AceHTML 5 Pro and TopStyle Pro 3 instead of HotDog Pro 6 which was my favorite HTML editor.

HotDog was pretty buggy and doesn't support XHTML yet. Its HTML validator wasn't ever that wonderful, even when it was current with the standards. More over, many of it's features are not implemented as well as AceHTML's. AceHTML on the other hand, is much more feature rich (with much more smarter features) and has very intuitive and natural interface. The only thing AceHTML lacks compared to HotDog is the easy right click file upload.

TopSytle Pro 3 is a powerful CSS creation and editing program. It makes CSS painless and producing W3C complaint CSS style sheets pain free.

I must warn you that neither AceHTML Pro or TopStyle Pro are intended for web design neophytes. Actually, I believe they're best suited to very advanced designers who have a deep understanding of HTML and CSS. Any potential user should also be very comfortable delving into code and writing it mostly by hand!

If you're looking for click to build wizards or a simple FrontPage type program these two are not for you. However, if you enjoy coding by hand in notepad or another text editor you really should try these two incredibly well designed HTML and CSS editors. I plan on registering them very soon and making them my primary design tools.

Lately, I've been using WinSyntax 2.0 for my PHP development. Lightweight, and free!

EasyRGB’s Color Harmonizer does a remarkable job of creating complements and harmonies for any RGB color you input. (Hat tip: Jeff Wilkinson and Zeldman.) It can’t take the place of a designer’s eye, but it can show you complementary colors you might not have come up with on your own.

Pixie is awesome! It's a really tiny tool that allows you to get the color values where your mouse is. Say if you're trying to match the color scheme to a site perfectly, but don't know the values, and don't want to do a screen shot then pull it into photoshop. Color values are given in hex, rgb, and I think cymk.

Another day, another color picker: Kohaistyle’s Quick Color widget is fun to use and works well. Adjust the horizontal scrollbar and watch the complementary colors appear before your eyes Smile

Amanda - I feel a little foolish asking this, but I just installed "threads" today and have spent the afternoon bemoaning the fact that there's little there in the way of design tools for setting up or editing styles or templates....the two main issues are tables/text and colors, and this color tool is a step in the right direction. But novice that I am, I have no idea how to get or use this tool? Any pointers?
Thanks - Tony

Hi avnstf,

For threads there is this handy css map: http://www.infopop.com/support/ubbthreads/css_screens.html

Essentially the tool that amanda posted will just help you view a set of colors together....couple that with the css map and you should be able to make a pretty nice looking site.

Be sure to post here when you're finished too!
