I run a celebrity forum and quite often, I have to be cautious about allowing some posts to go onto the forum, i.e. posts that aren't true or are linking to newspaper reports that we don't really want to propogate etc etc. Anyway - I think it would be quite handy to have a small text box come up when you are deleting messages in the moderation queue that allows you to explain to the poster why you are deleting their post. I'm quite a Mummy on our site where I try not to allow arguments etc - so it would be good to be able to say "have a think before you post a reply to this, I'm deleting your post" or something rather than just deleting and then trying to find the user and send them a PM. Maybe something that just comes up when you click delete (on the page that says you are about to delete messages in the queue) which gives a small text box which will send your "refusal reason" back to the poster by PM or something? I'd find that incredibly useful

I've found that notifying people about posts in the mod queue being deleted only leads to squabbles in PM's as the poster tries to justify their reason for posting it. It gives them an "in" to open a dialog to get you to change your mind. If this dialog goes bad, then you have a problem child to deal with. Most times they'll think you're removing posts just because you don't like them.

Usually, I only give information on why something was not allowed on the board if the poster contacts me requesting a reason. It's a stock answer - "I'm sorry but it was decided it was inappropriate for the board" - and that usually ends the discussion.
