The default is that the box within the members settings is set to "I will permit occasional email from the administrators of this community." Some members uncheck it which I not only find arrogant, but it makes addressing behavior or establishing contact for any other reason impossible. I realize that as administrators we have the ability to reset the member's setting but is it a necessary feature? When/why would we wish to give members permission to decline contact from admin? I wouldn't mind seeing this option completely removed.

the "permit email from admin" checkbox only controls whether or not the user is included in a mass email or mailing list from the control panel. what i mean is - if you go to the CP and navigate to Eve>>Members>>Member Management and were to search for several users, then use the "View Selected as Mailing List" or "Mass Email Selected Members" tools, they would be excluded. they will still receive other contacts - such as email notification for banning, or PM notifications (if you were to send a PM and they have chosen to receive PM notifications). so really, this feature isn't banning you from emailing them, rather it's excluding them from being included in any sort of mass-emailing. does that make sense?

and if you already knew that, but you're thinking of a specific case where this is a particular nuisance, perhaps you could tell us more about it?

Okay, I'm following you now. I assumed since there were two options - one regarding email from admin and one to allow/not allow anyone to send PM's that because the first referred to administrators that the second referred to everone BUT.

Thanks for clearing that up.

That still leaves the issue though when they turn on that second setting to not allow anyone to send PM's, the Admins can't reach them either.

understandable, but an admin always has access to the user's email address via his/her profile, so if a private message can't be sent, an email could suffice. i guess there could be some debate over whether or not a user's right to choose if he wants to receive private messages should include those from administrators...

I would support such a feature with a control panel on/off toggle, not a member controllable one. Personally I'm of the thinking that if you're going to subscribe to be a site member it goes without saying that as administrators they should be able to contact you when the need arises.
