I have a spammer that just will not quit. I continually block his new usernames but he just comes right back up. The way that I am doing it is to go to "Suspend Members accounts." Is there anyway that I can just simply block his IP address?

Thanks,

-Robert

Robert,

Glad you found the setting.

(Eve Control Panel » Registration Settings » IP Banning section)

Also remember, you can always submit a support ticket for questions like this. Since we have 24/7 support now we should be able to address them pretty quickly.

Thanks,
-----

How can you tell what the members IP address is?

God Bless!

Hi Aaron,

To get the ip address of the user, go to your eve control panel > click eve > click members > click member management > search for your member > then in the search results you should see a column for "IP". This is the IP the user had when they registered.

I've had 20+ IPs since I've registered. Shouldn't it track the most-recent IP?

Better yet, it should list all IPs. I'm sure many people have Internet access at multiple locations.

So what's the solution when a member uses a dynamic IP? We have a guy that posts under various IP addresses. Banning the one that he registered under is useless. I haven't found a way for Eve to display all of the IP addresses that a member posts under, only his registered one.

Why not just block/disable his account alltogether?

Because there's nothing stopping him from registering under a different username.

Hi,

I might know the thing to help you: if you edit a post, you can see the IP used for that specific post. Just click options in the window in which you edit the post to view it.
This is helpful when a user keeps changing his/her IP, or when they masked their IP when they registered.

Hope that helps,

Jorre-

Yeah, I've used that as well, but if the member is using a dynamic IP then it tends to change rather frequently. You'd have to visit all of his posts to see which IP is being used. It would be nice if you could use the Control Panel to search for a specific member and then have it display the IP addresses that are associated with his/her account.

Well, you can just do a full range ban if it's a really malicious user. The IP's are usually similar, so it should disable them from coming back for good. But that's not advised if you have a huge amount of members, like we do.

Unfortunately, even knowing every IP a specific user has used isn't going to be real helpful in banning that user. It's too easy for users who want to mess with a free (non private) site to find a new IP address to come on in. I've found through the years it's a never-ending job of the site admin to try to keep the troublemakers away. It's been said here before, but eventually, most of the time, they get tired of trying to bring down a site.

Unless you run into one of our regulars, who was banned three freaking years ago and keeps coming back periodically under new guises. It ain't fun.

Three years? S/he's a piker! Wink

I've been dealing with small gaggle of cretins since 1993... first on the proprietary (pre-Internet access for all) online system I was a bulletin board leader with, then on the ISP they morphed into as their Communities Manager, and now on my personal web site.

Eeach time they come back like a bad yeast infection --hot, itchy and wanting to steal focus from the rest of my Members and their Aantares experience-- and each time I wind up spending a couple of days tracking IP usage, banning, not approving new registrations, changing usernames (anyone permanently banned from my site has " (RIP)" appended to their username & I change their login password, too) and more or less just staying a step or two ahead of 'em.

At this point in our looooong history, I think this guy does it because he enjoys the tradition more than anything else. I mean, it's not like he's ever accomplished anything.

When I went to a donation-based site, he even offered to send me a not-insignificant check to, as he put it, pay his way for the troubles he's caused me over the years. LOL!

Ooooh..... not a bad idea. We've been keeping a written list of aliases for this particular user, but adding that "RIP" to each of the names would let us pull up the full list quickly.

*runs off and steals idea*
