Dear Administration and Helpful members,

Is there a way to prevent users from editing their posts after 24 hours (or any set time frame)?

If so, how?

Thanks,

Hi, Bill.

There is a way to do this, but it's somewhat backwards from the way you describe it.

You can turn off their over-all ability to edit their posts, and then give them a window in which to editing is possible.

First, go to the permission snapshot:

Eve Control Panel > Eve > Members > Permission Snapshot

There, navigate to:

Forums > Personal Permissions and remove the "Edit/Delete Own Posts" permission. Then press the "Update Default Group Permissions" button.

Then, go to the Forum settings:

Eve Control Panel > Forums > Master Settings > Edit Grace Period

I should, however, point out that this grace period is usually set in minutes. I put 1440 minutes in (which would equal 24 hours) and the program accepted this total. I'm unsure, however whether such a large number would work correctly.

Does that make sense?

Paul,

This makes sense yes.

One question: will administrators still be able to modify posts after the said 24 hours? I don't want to block myself and other administrators from editing posts.

Thanks,

Bill

Whoops, Steven beat me to it.

Basically, any user with the ability to moderate other users' posts will still have that ability.

Paul and Steve,

Thanks for the guidance. One more question - how will this change impact a member from going back and adding photos to a created photo album? I'd still want this ability to remain though I'd like to stop them from removing photos.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Bill (Falceros)

Hi, Bill.

Sorry for the delay in my response. I had to test this myself.

It looks like it's an all or nothing thing. If the user doesn't have permission to exit their own posts, they won't be able to add photos once the edit grace period has expired.

Paul,

Thanks for your reponse.

That's weird because I swear that other members were doing this successfully, even after the grace period, but one member emailed me today and it says he doesn't have permission to add a photo to his album.

I'm not sure the benefit of protecting our posts is worth the inconvenience - is there any other way?

Thanks,

Bill

A couple of other things you should know about this "feature." While they can edit their own posts within the grace window, they cannot delete their own posts within this window. And while they can edit attachments within the grace window, they cannot delete attachments.

Hi, Kimmer: The issue of a user not being able to delete attachments has been fixed in the upcoming release (coming soon). I've reported the issue of a user not being able to delete his post to the developers.
